From a 17th-century house on Mare Street to a former dairy on Shacklewell Lane, and now 70 new homes at the Fairbank Estate in Hoxton, we’ve completed a whole range of projects in East London over the past decade, each one a site-specific response to the people and places we’ve come to know intimately. In the 1990s and early 2000s, we lived and worked in Hoxton, and that experience — navigating the ambiguous, non-determinate landscapes around modernist housing blocks — continues to shape how we design.
On Mare Street, we’re re-converting a 700m² Grade II* listed house — at various times a women’s refuge, working men’s club and squat — into a family home and public arts space, whilst preserving its palimpsestic character.
